The Silent Sock is one of three confirmed survivors of the Great Laundry Storm and the only survivor found inside the drum after the cycle concluded.
She has not spoken since the night of March 14, 1999. She remains in the drum. She is considered a living memorial.
The Silent Sock was discovered by Gary at 10:04 PM, two minutes after the cycle ended.
He described her as sitting in the centre of the drum, completely still, facing the back wall.
Attempts to interview her for the DTAB inquiry produced no verbal response.
Investigators noted in their report that she was 'clearly present and aware of proceedings, and appeared to be listening carefully.'
At the 2001 SSSN annual meeting, a motion to launder The Silent Sock was raised by a newer household sock who felt the drum should be 'cleared and reclaimed.'
The motion was defeated unanimously. A subsequent motion in 2005 was not even seconded.
She has remained in the drum ever since, in roughly the same position Gary found her.
All offers of relocation, laundering, or repatriation to the drawer have been declined by consensus vote.
